Our major development for 2025 is up-grading the safety matting in our outdoor playground. Our current rubber safety matting has been in place for over a decade and is now significantly deteriorated. The surface is uneven, pulling apart, and has accumulated weeds, debris, and mould—posing both safety hazards and fall height compliance concerns. It is no longer fit for purpose and undermines our commitment to providing a high-quality, safe learning environment.

In replacing the current surface, we have opted for SmartGrass, an industry leading synthetic turf system. SmartGrass NZ has tailored its products and innovations specifically for New Zealand environments, including UV stability, drainage for local weather conditions, and safe, eco-conscious options for schools and preschools. Their Premium Earth Series, like the SmartGrass Oasis 35 and Retreat 40, is 100% recyclable and designed with both durability and aesthetic appeal in mind, often chosen by NZ early learning services and schools for its safety compliance and natural look. We believe this will be the perfect solution for our early learning service too.

SmartGrass not only meets all relevant safety and fall height standards, but it also offers superior longevity, a 10-year warranty, and a significantly more natural look and feel. This will allow us to transform the rooftop into a space that is visually inviting, soft fall compliant, and usable all year round.
